The fifth season of The 100 premiered on The CW on April 24, 2018, and concluded on August 7, 2018. It was announced on March 10, 2017.
The season aired on Tuesday nights at 9:00 PM following The Flash in the spring for the first eight episodes of the season before moving to 8:00 PM prior to The Outpost in the summer for the remaining five episodes.
It arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on October 9, 2018.
Synopsis[]
For four seasons, THE 100 have fought to survive. That fight has torn them apart, turned them against each other, and taken the lives of their closest friends. Season Four introduced our heroes to the harsh truth that the human race is doomed to face an unbeatable enemy: the remaining nuclear reactors on Earth have melted down and are setting the atmosphere on fire. Our heroes had very little time to prepare for the worst, with every possible solution disappearing almost as quickly as they were able to come up with them. With a literal countdown to the end of the world, our heroes will be forced to go to unimaginable lengths to make it out alive – with or without each other. In the aftermath of Praimfaya, they must begin again, and with Season Five our heroes will have to examine their responsibility to the new place they call home, and the future generations who will inhabit it. Can they begin again and celebrate what remains, or will the frailties of human nature cost them their one chance to rise from the ashes?[1]

Filming for the fifth season launched on August 14, 2017 and wrapped up on January 27, 2018.[2]
Casting[]
On January 19, 2018, Shannon Kook was announced to make an appearance as a guest star set to portray mystery character in the season finale and in the now-confirmed sixth season.[3]

Critical response[]
On Rotten Tomatoes, the fifth season received overall positive reviews, with a 100% rating score on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 81%. The critics consensus states, "Five years in, The 100 manages to top itself once again with an audacious, addicting season."[4]
Ratings[]
The season premiere received a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, with a total of approximately 1,430,000 viewers, making it the most viewed episode of the series in over two years, and the highest-rated since the fifth episode of the previous season. The following three episodes received over one million viewers per episode, with the third reaching a 0.4 rating, and the second and fourth reaching 0.3. This increase in viewership can likely be explained by The Flash (the highest-rated series on The CW) serving as a lead-in for The 100 for the first time ever. Every episode after the fourth received less than one million viewers, and episodes six through eight dropped in viewership consecutively. The series received its first 0.2 rating with the June 26 episode, before the series was pushed forward by one hour on July 10 to serve as a lead-in to new summer series The Outpost. The final five episodes received 0.3, except for the July 17 episode, which reached 0.2 in the 18-49 demographic. The season finale received nearly one million live viewers, making it the most-viewed finale of the series since the third season's "Perverse Instantiation, Part 2".
